Annotated Poem Project: "Darkness" This project should shed some light on George Gordon, Lord Byron's poem "Darkness" (1816). "Darkness" is a poem written by Lord Byron during the summer of 1816, or the "year without a summer." The darkness referred to in the title occurred because of the eruption of a volcano in the Dutch East Indes that rained ash and caused many rare weather occurrences.
